Cleansing the inside of our cups

The world pushes us to think of ourselves from the outside in. Everywhere we turn, we’re encouraged to present a polished version of ourselves — whether it’s a flawless social media profile, a carefully curated professional image, or even the façade of having everything under control. But real change — whether in our teams, our families, or the world at large — doesn’t start on the outside. It starts within.

Lasting influence comes from authenticity. People don’t follow perfection; they follow sincerity. When we live with a pure heart, our actions flow from a place of integrity. That authenticity becomes magnetic. It builds trust, it creates connection, and it inspires others to do the same. On the other hand, when the inside of our lives is cluttered with pride, fear, or selfish ambition, no amount of polish on the outside can make up for it. Eventually, what’s inside spills out.

The truth is, transformation always begins from within. If we want stronger teams, healthier families, or a better world, the starting point is our own hearts. Do we know what we value? Do we have the courage to live by those values, even when it’s hard? Do we hold ourselves accountable before we ask the same of others? These are the questions that shape authentic change.

Too often, though, our culture runs in the opposite direction. We are quick to outrage, quick to point fingers at “them” — politicians, corporations, leaders, even neighbors — before we ever pause to examine ourselves. Outrage is easy. Personal accountability is hard. But it’s also far more effective. The question isn’t, “Why won’t they change?” The question is, What can I control, and how can I best influence this situation? The answer always begins at the same place: with me.

I once worked for a leader who modeled this powerfully. Whenever a problem arose, his first step wasn’t to blame or deflect. Instead, he started with himself, looking for the source of the issue in concentric circles around his own desk. His belief was simple: accountability begins here. That attitude created an environment where people didn’t just fear mistakes; they learned from them. And it reminded me that personal responsibility is the foundation of collective progress.

If we want to change the world, we cannot start by demanding change “out there.” We must begin by cleaning our own house — our thoughts, our motives, our actions. When our hearts are aligned with truth and integrity, the impact naturally flows outward. Families become stronger. Teams become healthier. Communities become more resilient. And, step by step, the world itself changes.

The outside will always reflect the inside. That’s why the most powerful work we can do is the unseen work of aligning who we are with what we believe. When we live authentically, lead with a pure heart, and hold ourselves accountable first, we don’t just change ourselves — we create ripples that reach far beyond us.

A Call to Action: Start today by asking yourself three questions:

  1. What is within my control right now?

2. How can I influence this situation in a way that reflects my values?

3. Am I leading with authenticity and a pure heart?

If we each answered those questions honestly — and acted on them — the world wouldn’t just look cleaner on the outside. It would be healthier, stronger, and more whole from the inside out.
